In order to completely understand my review of Dr. Shifflett, I need to elaborate some of my background. I am a 35 y/o practicing physician assistant and have been seeing my own patients for almost 9 years. I treat my patients like family, give them the time they need to ask questions, and many of them even have my personal cell phone number. I also call my patients after clinic hours to check on them after their surgical procedures.
Given that I am a reasonable person with reasonable expectations, I would never expect another medical provider to go to this extent for me. I simply desire to be treated with respect and be given time to process new medical information while feeling that my concerns are adequately addressed.
Now that the tables have turned, and I am officially a patient myself, it has been a really disappointing experience to realize that the quality of care I provide to my own patients is not the norm in medicine and is far less common than I hoped. Many of the spine surgeons I have met with barely gave me 10 minutes, lacked much needed empathy, and were at times dismissive. So dismissive, that a few surgeons actually missed some crucial findings in my cervical and thoracic spine even after I expressed I was having neck pain, tingling, and headaches for months..
After a year of dealing with incompetent and arrogant providers, I traveled to California to consult with Dr Shifflett at the recommendation of a few friends from Newport Beach.
Talking with Dr Shifflett and his physician assistant, Brooke, was a much needed breath of fresh air. The care and kindness I received at this appointment surpassed my expectations. In fact, I was so pleasantly shocked by my consultation with Dr Shifflett that I felt unprepared with questions to ask because I was expecting to be herded through like cattle. By the time I left his clinic, my attitude had completely shifted, and I went home with an overwhelming sense of positivity. I went from dreading the thought of any surgery to wanting to sign myself up for every surgery Dr Shifflett offers! I realized that my initial negative attitude was stemming from my fear of not being able to find a spine surgeon I could trust whole heartedly. Even though I really don’t want surgery, I’m at total peace now knowing I will be in good hands when this time comes in the near future.
I’m thankful for Dr Shifflett’s genuine professionalism, attention to quality care, and the ability to converse without a condescending attitude.
Surgeons like Dr Shifflett are a rare gem and hard to come by these days. I definitely don’t take Dr Shifflett for granted after the frustrating experiences I’ve been through, and I will be forever in debt to my friends who helped me find him!

Dr Shifflett and his amazing team are my heros! When anyone else would have given up on my difficult case, they continue to make me feel like I matter! Their care for me, their immediate response to my concerns, always going over and above every step of the way can be compared to none. Excellent experience seeing Dr.Shifflett for a consultation.
Experiencing chronic neck and lower back pain (degenerated discs). Physical therapy hasn’t solved the issue.
Dr.Shifflett clearly explained the surgical options and how we can resolve.

I have undergone 2 procedures with Dr. Shifflett and staff. From the initial consultation Dr. Shifflett has been open to discussing multiple options as well as likely outcomes. His ability to listen to the patient is amazing. His bed manner is the best I have ever seen and I truly believe he wants what is best for his patients. I have the possibility of having to have another surgery down the line and I wouldn’t want anyone else working on my neck or back in the future. Thank you Dr. Shifflett and Hanna for providing such an amazing service, one of the best.

Dr Shifflett did a superb job with surgery for herniated disk surgery in my lower back. He really cares about patients. I was referred to him by my internist. I am out of pain, from the moment I awoke from surgery. Great experience.

From start to finish, his office was very thorough, competent and most important, compassionate. Dr. Shifflett gave me the various options regarding my condition and was very upfront about both pros and cons going forward. I am very glad I decided to go with the procedure (microdiscectomy). With that said, the ease of check-in, flow of process (day of surgery) knowledge and kindness of the staff was very comforting.

I recently went to Dr. Shifflett for a spine consultation. I am 75 years old and have already had one spine surgery about 5 years ago. I have many issues with my spine and am in pain everyday because of it. Dr. Shifflett was compassionate, kind, answered all my questions, and there was no rush to move onto the next patient. He immediately diagnosed my main problem at L3-L4 and recommended a microdisectomy and microdecompression minimally invasive. I said O.K. let's proceed which we did. I liked his approach with me that "less is more" because many of the other neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons wanted to do a major anterior/posterior lumbar fusion. That is a big surgery that I'm trying to avoid. It has been 12 days post surgery now and I'm starting to feel better with less pain. He advised that at 6 weeks post surgery, I will feel much better.Dr. Shifflett is a very bright physician and a pleasure to converse with. I have all the confidence in the world in him and would highly recommend him to anyone with spine issues.

There is nothing like great news to make a visit excellent. After 5 months of pain, I am pain free! I cannot express how thankful I am for the wonderful care and overall experience I had at Disc and from Dr. Shifflett. Everything came off perfectly with my procedure and every effort was made to help understand what was wrong with my and what they could do to correct my condition.
